We refer to doctors as ‘medical practitioners’ much of the time. By definition a practitioner is “a person engaged in the practice of a profession”. Doctors are constantly practicing whether on call or not. They frequently receive calls from friends and family alike who wish to ask for a consult or advice in general when dealing with various medical problems. My mother often encounters these situations. Oftentimes even old classmates or work colleagues who she’s had no contact with for years will call her up to request advice. I believe this can be attributed to a ‘trust’ factor that comes with the profession. Many individuals gravitate towards the job of a medical practitioner due to the nobility of the field. The entire purpose of the job is to do everything in one’s ability to due others. Whether you are an obstetrician delivering a baby, an infectious disease specialist assisting with an influx of Covid cases, a dermatologist prescribing medicine to improve someone’s skin and thus confidence or a surgeon patching up a life-threatening injury, the magnanimity of the career as a whole should not ever go unappreciated.
